へぷとんのたんぶら

　先日、学生たちとの飲み会で、参加者の１人が悲痛な告白を始めた。盛り上がっていた宴は静まり返り、みんなの目に涙が浮かんだ。

　もう全部なくなっちゃったの、と女子学生は言った。人生最悪の体験を語る彼女の言葉に、周りは震えながら耳を傾けた。彼女は携帯電話を落としたのだ！

　強い衝撃を受けた携帯は修理不能となり、長年ためていたメールやアドレスやボーイフレンドの写真は二度と戻らない。彼女は涙を拭い、みんな心からの同情を寄せた。これぞ東京では日常的な悲劇──「携帯落下」の悲劇である。

　東京人にとって携帯の話題は、天気と同じくらいありきたりだ。誰もが何かしら言いたがる。携帯はお金と同じくらい東京の生活に欠かせない。だから携帯を落とした人がいると、周りは子供が目の前で転んだときのように心配する。

　誰かの手から携帯が滑り落ち、くるくると宙を舞い、舗道に弾むのを目撃すると、私はつい笑いだしそうになる。持ち主はあたふたしながら携帯を追い掛け、キョロキョロと地面を捜し回る。普段はクールな東京人が一瞬でパニックに陥る姿は、どこか滑稽だ。
