彼が新規事業をやりたいと上司の法律家に提案した際の逸話が秀逸であったので紹介したい。彼の上司は経営会議から帰ってきてこう言った。

　「役員40人が全員反対していた。それでもやりたいか」。
　「やりたいです」。
　「分かった。俺に任せろ。ただし1年待て。40人説得するにはそのくらいかかる」。

　この上司は本当に1年かけて、全役員の賛成を取り付けてきた。もちろん理屈で説得したわけではない。元技術者の部下にとっては、上司がどうやって説得してきたのかまったく分からなかったという。「おそらく、出張とかゴルフとか宴席とか、そういった社外の場所で根回ししたんだと思います。権謀術策もあそこまで行けば見事です。嫌みではなく、本当に感服しました。僕には絶対できませんね」。ちなみに40人を説得した上司は見事、社長になった。
